Affectionately known as “Bitcoin Burgoyne”, Matthew is a partner in McLeod Law’s Business Law group with a niche focus in cryptocurrency and blockchain. Matthew’s fascination with digital currency began in 2013 when bitcoin began to emerge. “Whenever a law is about to change, that’s an opportunity to help businesses get ready to adapt,” he says. Matthew dug into the topic and quickly became a noted authority, speaking internationally, making media appearances and publishing articles. He was instrumental in McLeod being one of Canada’s first law firms to accept payment in bitcoin.

  • Why did you decide to go into your profession?

I enjoyed logic and critical thinking.

  • Tell us about your work.

I am a business lawyer, focusing on corporate law and securities law. I act for a wide range of clients but I focus on providing corporate and securities regulatory advice to those involved in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space, and participants in the private mortgage lending space.

  • How did you come to join your organization?

Myself and my mentor at the time left our former law firm, and together with an assistant, we left our former firm and joined my current firm.

  • Who has been the biggest influence on your career?

Probably my mentor, Barry Bernhardt. He has since retired from the practice of law. Also, the advent of bitcoin completely altered my career path in law, in terms of building a brand new practice area at my firm.

  • Name one skill you think every good professional should have.

  • What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy the thrill of seeking out and onboarding new clients. I enjoy the satisfaction that comes with improving my legal drafting skills, there is always room for improvement. I enjoy the satisfaction that comes in giving good advice to people in need, and giving clients value.

  • What's your best advice for a new professional in your field?

Do not turn down work that comes your way. Respond to clients within a few hours, always, even a one line reply to acknowledge their email. Try to maintain regular contact with your clients, via lunches, breakfasts or phone/Zoom calls.
