Career Moves In Pandemic Times

Three reasons why now is the time to act.

It’s hard to believe that last year at this time we were all going about our business, commuting to work, chauffeuring the kids to their activities, holiday shopping, meeting friends for drinks – oblivious to how different this year would be.

Lockdowns, quarantines, the break from routines, business and school closures – have forced a kind of collective reassessment about what aspects of our lives we want to return to ‘normal’. Many people are feeling impelled to create more possibilities for their lives.

“All we know is that the most important changes of the last 100 years have taken place during upheavals. And we’re currently in the biggest upheaval of the last 100 years,” wrote Morgan Housel, partner of The Collaborative Fund and author of The Psychology of Money. “We know that creativity and discovery surge when people are forced to find, rather than just want, new solutions.”

While the natural urge might be to play it safe, hunker down and wait for the pandemic storm to pass, there are good reasons to get the ball rolling now.

  1. Leveraging the bust. Sectors such as travel, hospitality, restaurants, and marketing are suffering. Yet once people circulate and spend again, these sectors will see a huge resurgence. Now is the time to prepare – upgrade your skills, do online courses, and build a network with those who will be movers and shakers when the economy turns up.

  2. Being part of the boom. Meanwhile, there are sectors – food delivery, online retail, healthcare and medical support services – that are booming now. It’s all hands on deck. Now is an ideal time to reach out and earn some on-the-job-training.

  3. Change is the only constant. Maya Frost, a change coach and founder of Switch Strategies told InStyle Magazine, “The pandemic is shaking things up so thoroughly that there's far less of a stigma attached to job loss or being out of the market for a while.”

Relying on one job, one set of skills, and one employer can create an overly dependent situation. Knowing you have options – skills to fall back on, other industries you can turn to – can create resilience, confidence and a greater sense of freedom to choose what is best for you.

“When you don’t know what the future will bring, or when the path you thought you were on takes an unexpected turn, it makes sense to pursue a diverse portfolio of options rather than just sticking single-mindedly to one,” writes Hermini Ibarra, a Professor of Organizational Behavior at London Business School in a column for the Harvard Business Review.

Take this time to breathe, plan, and embrace the changes you need. Reach out to a career counsellor or an expert who can help fine-tune your resume or business plan. In the words of Morgan Housel, “…hopefully you’ll see why 2020, for all the hell its brought, could be the new beginnings of something promising.”
